Wildspirits and creatures have been finding their way into Woodchi’s designs since his fledgling days.
During early development of the Oldewoods, however, a particluar few escaped into the world via the form of published postcards, gift tags and enamel pins. All thanks to the clever fellows at Playing Grounded.
Discovering the lore of each elf who appears in Woodchi’s work is half the fun of the design.
The sketch is most always first. Well, the idea is always first, which then gains form and life on the page. As the sketch progesses, ideas for their character or role helps define them and what they’re up to. The lore evolves from this.
Above are many elfs who appeared on gift tags, each inked with the intention to be coloured by the patron or whomever they gifted it to, the colourist discovering the details in the process.
Heralds and Other House Elfs
The herald, ranger, venturian and vanguard elfs are representatives of House Woodchi. Their natural colours are typical of house Woodchi. Their visage, raiment and gear personifies the activity and values of the artist, that of crafting worlds for adventure.
Before the Oldewoods really took shape there was a time of speculation. In that time the five Seasons of Woodchi settled in from the west, sharing similarities to the well-known seasons of Western countries of Earth.
The idea for the postcards was for a sender to invite or remind someone of an event or festival or simply offer best wishes, by writing on the back their message.
Perhaps the sender would colour the design, or start it, or leave it for the recipient. As they wished.
The dragonetti were of an old Age of the Oldewoods, become legendary since the age ended. Rumours have it that some still wander the wildest places. And thus were crafted field spotters’ cards for wanderers, letting them know key info should they be fortunate enough to encounter one.
And lo there were crafted charms, each an image of one of the most legendary of the dragonetti of legend. Purveyors of said pins were sure to remind their lucky customers of the hopeless chances they’d have of spotting a dragonetti without one. Even so, the master crafter who shaped them only managed to make a limited handful and all have passed into the hands of venturian hearted fellows, and have perhaps been lost to the wilds.
The Woodspookle Dragonetti sketch was the initial concept that inspired not only the varieties of its kind but led to the Oldewoods themselves. As you can see, the Woodspookle had noble companions, a Valiant knight and a Gallant sage of the woods. Both could ride the destrier dragonetti on the two-tier saddle.
The pins and cards were the last Kickstarter for the World of Woodchi team-up.
Messenger Leafs with wellwishing tags still cross the Atlantic to and from these guys. Without Playing Grounded the World of Woodchi give-and-keepsakes would not have made it into the world. Many Cheers!
